What is restoration and finishing?

Restoration is about repairing and reviving pieces rather than building new. It covers stripping, filling, colour matching, veneer repair, waxing and French polishing. It suits people who already own something worth saving, and the skills transfer straight to anything you make yourself.

Where to learn restoration and finishing

Every region we hold a restoration and finishing course for. Where there are enough for a page of their own it goes straight there, otherwise to everything woodwork in that region.

Getting started with restoration and finishing

What is the hardest part to learn?

Knowing when to stop. Technically the difficult skills are colour matching and getting a hand polished finish flat and even. But the judgement that separates a good restorer from an enthusiastic one is leaving alone what should be left alone, because an over-restored piece is worth less than a tired original and the damage cannot be undone.

How do you get started in furniture restoration?

On something you do not mind ruining. Almost everybody's first piece is a charity shop chair or something inherited that is already past caring about, and that is the right way round. The first skills are cleaning, reviving an existing finish and repairing a loose joint, all of which are reversible. Stripping something back to bare wood is the fastest way to destroy the value of a piece and is very often unnecessary.

Can you make a living restoring furniture?

People do, and it is a real trade rather than a hobby that pays. It also takes years, because the work that pays is the work nobody else can do: colour matching, veneer repair, cane and rush seating, French polishing. A short course will not get you there but it will tell you quickly whether the work suits you, and it is the normal first step.

Where can I learn restoration and finishing for free?

It is the most asked question in woodworking, and the honest answer is a men's shed or a community workshop rather than a course. We list 933 of them across the UK, and most charge a small subscription or a few pounds a session rather than a course fee. Find one near you. They are not classes and nobody teaches to a syllabus, but the tools are there, and somebody will almost always show you.

Other kinds of woodwork

Most people arrive knowing they want to make something rather than knowing the name of the craft. These are the other ten.
