How we check our listings
Every listing on Woodwork UK is taken from a public source, read by a person, and published with a link back to where it came from. This page says where each kind of listing comes from, what we check, and what we do not.
Courses and the makers who run them
Where they come from. The 527 courses and 175 makers and schools come from each maker's own website and the booking sites they sell through.
What we check. That the course is hobby woodwork and not a trade qualification. That its booking page still opens. The price, read from the maker's own page: 466 courses show one, and each says the month we last read it. We read the prices again every month, and where one could not be confirmed the page keeps the earlier month. A course whose page has gone comes off. One whose date has passed is marked as ended or comes off.
Men's sheds
Where they come from. The UK Men's Sheds Association's public directory, with each shed's own website where it has one.
What we check. Whether the shed says, in its own words, that it does woodwork. Being a men's shed does not prove it: of the 933 sheds we hold, 341 say so. 760 of them have a page of their own, because they tell us enough to fill one; the rest are listed on their area's page, and each shed page tells you which kind it is. We publish no phone number or email for any shed, because those belong to volunteers.
Furniture restorers
Where they come from. Public business listings and each business's own website.
What we check. Each one was read one at a time before it was published: that its listing does not say it has closed, that it restores or finishes wooden furniture, and that it is not a second listing for a business already here. That reading left 12 out and 322 in. Phone numbers and opening hours are shown as the business lists them, with the month we saw them.
What we do not check
- We have not been on these courses, visited these sheds or used these restorers.
- We do not check qualifications, insurance or the quality of anybody's work.
- We publish no reviews, ratings or rankings, and the order of a page is not a recommendation.
- Dates, prices and opening hours can change after we read them. Confirm with the provider before you book or travel.
Who does the checking
Ben Criddle, the editor, is the named person accountable for every page. He is not a woodworker. The job is finding these places, reading what they say about themselves and publishing it accurately.
Getting a listing changed or removed
If a listing is wrong, out of date or yours and unwanted, email [email protected]. Corrections are usually made the same week. Removal is on request and you do not need to give a reason. Our privacy notice covers the rest.
