Privacy notice

This site has no accounts, no logins and no adverts, and it stores nothing on your phone or computer. This page says what personal data we do hold, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.

Who is responsible

Woodwork UK is run by FIXR SYSTEMS LIMITED, a company registered in England and Wales, number 15889598. For data protection law it is the controller of the information described here. Its registered office is on our terms page.

If we list your business, club or shed

Most of what we publish is about organisations, not people. Some of the businesses are one person working under their own name, and for them a listing is personal data.

What we hold and show. The name, the town and region, a link to the website, and what the business or group says it does. For course providers, the courses they advertise with prices and lengths. For furniture restorers, also the business phone number, opening hours and services where the business lists them publicly. For men's sheds, the postcode and what the shed says about itself. We publish no email address for anyone, and no phone number for any men's shed.

Where it comes from. Public sources only. Courses come from the providers' own pages and the booking sites they use. Furniture restorers come from public business listings, including Google Maps, and from their own websites. Men's sheds come from the UK Men's Sheds Association's public directory and each shed's own pages. Nothing is bought and nothing comes from a private source.

Why, and on what basis. So that people can find a course, a shed or a restorer near them and go straight to it. The legal basis is legitimate interests: ours in running a directory, the public's in finding these places, and the listed business's in being found. We show only details the business has already made public for that purpose.

How long. For as long as the listing is live. When a business closes or asks to come off, the page comes down. We keep a short note of a removal request, so that the listing is not added again by mistake.

You can have anything changed or removed. If a listing is yours and you want a detail corrected, a phone number taken off, or the whole page gone, email [email protected]. You do not need to give a reason.

If you email us

We keep your email address and your message so that we can reply and act on what you asked. Our email is provided by Google Workspace. We delete correspondence within two years of the last message, apart from the removal notes described above. We do not add you to any mailing list.

When you visit

Nothing is stored on your device. No cookies, and nothing in your browser's storage. That is why there is no cookie banner. If you accepted cookies on an earlier version of this site, the site deletes those leftovers on your next visit. Our cookie page says the same in more detail.

Our own count. We count how many times each page is viewed and how many times someone clicks through to a provider. The count holds no IP address, no browser details and no time finer than the day, so it cannot be traced to a person. It also keeps a daily total of the kind of place visitors arrived from, such as Google, Bing or an AI assistant, and of the words typed into our search box. It is held on Cloudflare's servers in Western Europe.

Cloudflare. The site is delivered by Cloudflare, which handles your IP address to send you the page and to keep the site secure, as any host does. Its Web Analytics gives us totals such as visits by country and uses no cookies.

Google Analytics, without cookies. We run Google Analytics with consent set to refused for everyone, all the time. In that mode it sets no cookie and cannot recognise you from one visit to the next. Your browser still sends Google a signal for each page: the page address, the page you came from, your browser type and a rough location worked out from your IP address. We use the totals to see which pages are read. We do not use it for advertising.

Other services your browser contacts

  • OpenStreetMap supplies the map on listing pages.
  • OpenFreeMap supplies the map on area, town and craft pages in every section. It is only contacted once the map loads. If you press "Nearest to me", your location is used inside your own browser to find the closest listing and is sent to nobody, including us.
  • Google supplies the "preferred sources" button in the footer of every page.

Each of these receives your IP address when your browser fetches from it, which is how the web works, and none of them is told who you are by us. Google and Cloudflare are based in the United States and handle data there and in other countries under their own published safeguards.

We sell no data and share none with advertisers. There are no advertising trackers on this site.

Your rights

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
