Accessibility

Woodwork UK should be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, or a magnified screen. This page says what has been built in, what has been checked, and what has not.

What is built in

• Every page is plain HTML that works with JavaScript switched off. Nothing you need to read is behind a script.
• Every page has one main heading and headings in order, so a screen reader can move through the page by structure.
• A skip to main content link is the first thing you reach by keyboard.
• Header, navigation, main content and footer are marked up as landmarks.
• Links and buttons say where they go. There is no "click here" or bare "read more".
• Keyboard focus is visible on every background, and everything you can click you can also reach by keyboard. The menus tell a screen reader when they are open.
• Text meets the 4.5 to 1 contrast minimum against its background.
• Images that carry meaning have a text description. Images that are decoration are marked as decoration, so a screen reader skips them rather than reading a filename.
• Questions open as dropdowns built from the browser's own details element, so they work by keyboard and with a screen reader, and every answer is in the page itself.
• The search page filters listings that are already on the page. It does not fetch anything, so it works without a connection once the page has loaded.

What has not been done

This site has not had a formal WCAG audit and does not claim a conformance level. The points above are built into the templates. Each kind of page has been put through an automated accessibility test, which reports no failures, and through a keyboard check that every link and button can be reached and shows where focus is. It has not been tested by a person using a screen reader. None of this is the same as an independent audit, and saying otherwise would be a claim we cannot support.

A listing's photographs come from that business. Where it supplied no description of an image, ours describes what the photograph shows rather than what is being made in it.
